The Attorney General’s Office provides legal advice and support to the Law Officers, who give legal advice to government and perform independent duties in the public interest.
Responsibilities
The Attorney General’s Office supports the functions of the Attorney General and Solicitor General, the Law Officers.
Their responsibilities include:
- acting as the Government’s principal legal advisers on public law, constitutional law and other questions of law arising across government
- superintending the Crown Prosecution Service and Serious Fraud Office
- general oversight of the Government Legal Department and Government Legal Profession
- sponsorship of the LL Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate
- advising on legislation, constitutional instruments and legal compatibility
- carrying out independent public-interest legal functions
- exercising prosecution-consent functions where these are assigned by law
- promoting the rule of law and high standards in government legal work
Neither the Attorney General’s Office nor the Law Officers provides general legal advice to members of the public or businesses.
Who we work with
The Law Officers’ departmental family includes the Crown Prosecution Service, Government Legal Department and Serious Fraud Office. The Office also works closely with the Ministry of Justice, Interior Office and legal teams across government.
